We wish all our customers and friends a very Happy Easter and good wishes for the future
Get well soon wishes
Our very own Michael Jordan has recently become ill and cannot visit us here in the Centre. Michael became ill about two weeks ago and is sadly missed here in the Centre by our staff and those whom Michael has been coaching daily in handball.
Michael visited the Youth Centre three or four times every day and could always be seen encouraging the youth of the town to play handball and the other sports available in the Centre. Michael has been our main communication with the primary schools here in town and has built up fantastic support and interest in handball here at the Centre. It is a great achievement for any person to convince our local schools to include the sport of handball in their curriculum.
For many months we have seen teachers and students unite in the courts during school hours in the sport of handball and all of this is due to Michael's commitment to the sport.
We encourage the schools to continue their daily sessions here in the Centre and maintain the interest that Michael has developed.
In the meantime we all wish Michael ''Good Wishes'' and we look forward to meeting him again soon.
Who's going to Run This Town?
Would you? Well here is your chance. It was only a matter of time before our activities would spill out onto the streets of Fermoy! Kieran Barry, Manager of the Centre and Kealan O'Connor, well-known athlete, have joined forces to bring to you all this fantastic Sport and Entertainment Project.
This coming May sees the inauguration of Fermoy Community Youth Centre's ''Streets of Fermoy 5K Summer Series'', taking place, as the name suggests, around the streets of Fermoy. The first in the series of three races takes place at 7.30 pm on Thursday, 9th May and the following two races on the two Thursdays thereafter.
Registration will be open from 6.30 pm each evening at the Youth Centre.
Entries cost 15 euro for three races or 7 euro per individual race.
A Stronger Voice in North Cork
Are
you Over 60 - Calling the Voice of North Cork !!!!!
T.O. Park, Labbamologga, Mitchelstown and Fermoy Youth Centre joined
forces to hold the Local Heat (Mitchelstown / Fermoy Heat) of the
Over 60’s Talent Competition and it made great sense. It was a
fantastic Gala Night of Talent at T.O. Park last Tuesday Night
(26th March). There were 7 contestants, 3 from Fermoy and 4
from Mitchelstown. T.O. welcomed everyone to The Barn and introduced
the Over 60's founder, Paddy O'Brien to the audience and contestants.
Amazingly, this competition has been in existence for 37 years and has
raised much needed funds for the Irish Heart Foundation. Sr Una and
Humphrey O' Sullivan were the judges for the night. Representing
Fermoy were John O Mahony (Fermoy Active Retirement), Johnny Delaney
(Fermoy Youth Centre) and John Power (Fermoy Youth Centre).
Representing Mitchelstown / T.O. Park were Nellie Fitzgerald, Tony
Buckley and Margaret Rea. All contestants delighted the audience with
their chosen songs / recitations and it was obvious from the start
that the judges were not going to have an easy job. Members of the
audience joined in song, while the judges made their decisions and the catering staff prepared to satisfy our taste buds and sweet
tooth with a fantastic arrangement of buns and cakes. Then came the
magic moment and Paddy O'Brien took to the stage and announced the
winner as Tony Buckley. Well done, Tony and best of luck in the
finals! John O'Mahony was in second place with John Power (Harmonica)
in third. We wish to thank T.O. for allowing Fermoy to join T.O. Park in
this competition and we look forward to getting together again with
other events. Both ourselves at Fermoy Community Youth Centre and T.O. Park are community-based organisations and it makes a lot of sense to unite
from time to time to serve and entertain our respective communities,
for that is what we are all about.
We
wish to thank our Fermoy supporters for turning out in great numbers, as our attendance formed the majority of the audience, especially the
members of Fermoy Active Retirement, who travelled as a group.
LIVE DANCE COMING UP
On
May 16th next the famous entertainment husband and wife
duo THE CHECKERS will play their hearts out in our Palace Ballroom.
Music starts at 9.00pm and a great night is guaranteed. If you have
not been on the dance floor in front of THE CHECKERS, you are in for
an experience.
During
the week I spoke with a number of people about our Social Dancing on
Thursday nights. Many are of the opinion that the Social Dancing is
for beginners / learners and is tuition-based. This is not the case, as most who attend are experienced dancers and do not need tuition.
However, for those who do need tuition or guidance, Sheila Tobin is on
hand to help out. So, the message for this week to all those dancers
is to come and experience our Thursday Night Session. You will be
entertained and get tea / biscuits during the break. You will also
get fantastic exercise and get to see new faces.
Our
regular visits to T.O. Park Dancing continues each Monday Night and our
Thursday Night (at 8.00pm) dancing continues to grow each week. These
are Social Dancing events and it is a great way to get out from home,
unwind and meet new friends.
Entry
is a mere €6.00 or €10.00 for a couple, which includes
refreshments.
BINGO
Over the last number
of months our numbers attending Bingo have dropped considerably, resulting in a serious decline in the Youth Centre’s income. In
fact, for some time we have been giving out more money in prizes than
we take in on the door. Obviously, in any business this cannot
continue into the future and we are in discussion here at the Centre how best to tackle this problem. A very simple answer is to
endeavour to increase our attendance, so as not to have to make
decisions like increasing the cost of books (which are the cheapest
around) or reducing the cash prizes per week. Obviously, we would rather not have to take such measures, but we may be left with no other options.
Having said that, we
have a special request for all our faithful bingo customers, who have
been fantastic in supporting us, and that is to encourage
your friends and family members to come to the Bingo every Wednesday
Night to help solve this problem. We also reach out to all those who have not yet experienced the fun and great atmosphere at our weekly Bingo sessions to come and join us.
An excellent night’s
entertainment is guaranteed, so please come and join us next
Wednesday. Single Books cost €5.00 and Double Books cost €8.00.
We have the largest cash
prize pay-out each night in North Cork with cash prizes of €25.00
per line and €65 per full house. There is also the possibility of
winning a Jackpot or else €260.00.
